More than Mats – Rugmaking Past, Present and Future

Cliffe Castle Museum

Sat 14 Sep 2019 - Sun 3 Nov 2019

This exhibition by the Airedale, Lunesdale and West Riding Ruggers showcases the many different types and traditions of rugmaking. Discover old methods and new techniques. Explore the traditional thrift crafts which are not only being preserved by local groups but also by independent teachers and other individuals working at home. The crafts are being given a new lease of life and have also become forms of creative art. Some rugs are for sale which is noted on the labels.

The Airedale, Lunesdale and West Riding rug groups are based in Riddlesden, Kirkby Lonsdale and Idle respectively. Members are drawn from as far north as Alston from the Lake District, the Dales, Keighley, Bradford and Leeds, and south into Calderdale. Several belong to more than one group.

Please note this exhibition is located on the Balcony which is accessible by a flight of stairs. There is a exhibition brochure available on the ground floor for visitors who cannot access the exhibition space.
