Eye of the Beholder: Taking Inspiration

Cartwright Hall Art Gallery

Sat 28 Mar 2015 - Sun 5 Jul 2015

Bradford Museums and Galleries International Art Collection is a comparatively young collection, developed by way of purchasing, gifts and donations with curators, past and present, steering the direction of collecting with influence from Bradford's communities. However this exhibition explores the collection through a different prespective where commissioned artists have produced new and imaginative works, which have shaped the collection by introducing new, creative and thought provoking works, taking inspiration from the objects in the collection and the ethos of collecting.

To mark the 25th anniversary of collecting, this exhibiton showcases four new art commissions created by artists and practitioners chosen for excellence in their field, who work in a medium or theme complimentary to the International Art collection. This includes a ceramic mosaic by Lubna Chowdhary, Eric Broug's Islamic Jali screen, digital installation by Soraya Syed and Barbara Green's silk hangings. Displayed alongside these are collection items the artists have 'taken inspiration' from and artworks from the artists'collections.

Thanks to support from Arts Council England, four other leading Bradford artists have also responded to the collection.  These are Bradford's Nick Toczek (storyteller and puppeteer), Zaffar Kunial (poet), Kala Sangam (Indian dance and music) and Sehaj Singh (Indian classical instrumentalist).
