Welcome to Cliffe Castle’s Learning & Outreach programme.

We provide a range of educational opportunities and cultural experiences to support your 2014/15 curriculum needs. Our workshops, offered at a range of costs, cater for fully supported workshops, introductory sessions or self-service visits. See below for details

The Art and Science of Noticing

KS2, 3 & 4
Curriculum links to Art, History & English
This workshop encourages pupils to respond to the museum & gallery objects which inspire them. You can identify which areas of the museum building or collection you want to work with so it is a great creative starting point for a topic. During the workshop pupils will practice drawing skills, create a sketchbook page of details and write a poem without even realising!

Toys through time

KS1
Curriculum links to Art, History & English
Schools or groups wanting to enjoy a hands on toys experience can book to use our 'toys through time' handling boxes – a fantastic collection of real toys from Victorian times to the present day - with full teacher/helper instructions.
1 hour teacher led session
£32 (max 30 pupils with a minimum of 3 teachers or teaching assistants)


Working Landscapes: Stone Age to Iron Age

KS2
Curriculum links to History, Art & Design, Technology
Pupils will get hands on with real stone age objects and use archaeological techniques - including digging and recording - to discover how people from the stone and bronze age interacted with the land around them.
1.5 hour workshop

Rocks and Fossils

KS2
Curriculum links to Science As budding geologists with over 30 rock specimens to handle, pupils will experiment with identifying and grouping rocks, learning about their uses and digging to discover fossils.

Animal, Skeleton, Skull

KS2

By studying animal skeletons, pupils will explore which bones and muscles help animals to move in different ways. A bit of detective work will help pupils to correctly identify 10 skulls ranging from hippo to mouse!

Ancient Egyptian Mummification

Find out about how the Ancient Egyptians prepared their dead for the afterlife by taking part in a step by step mummification and handling real Ancient Egyptian burial goods.

Living Things & Their Habitats: Who’s Coming to Dinner?

Curriculum links to Science In this fun and hands on workshop pupils prepare for an animal dinner party by naming animals, micro habitats and sources of food for a range of animals in the local environment.

Belonging: Debate & Discuss

Cliffe Castle has objects from all over the world but why are they here and how did they get here? A discussion and debate based workshop exploring the cultural and ethical arguments surrounding museum collections.

Art & Science of Noticing: Keighley Explorer

KS1

A workshop which uses the museum’s collections to support children to make links between Keighley, the world around them and historical people and places. Pupils investigate the collections and objects through hands on activities and are guided by their own curiosity to create personal responses.
1.5 hour workshop

Art & Science of Noticing: Museum Timeline

KS2
Curriculum links to Art, History & English
Using the museum’s Fossil, Stone Age, Roman and Victorian galleries pupils will develop their observation, recording and drawing skills whilst creating a chronological timeline. By collecting words then thinking about language and questions to accompany their drawings, pupils will also produce a poem.

Self service resources 

Early years and KS1
Early Years and KS1 groups can enjoy our dolls house, builders rocks, sit on sheep, tactile cards, dressing up and even create their own Keighley building with our building blocks.
