Multisensory handling bags

Habitat bag
Fossils bag
These bags contain resources to allow independent exploration of the museum displays. Containing objects sounds and smells the bags can be used to prompt discussion and encourage pupils to find out more from the displays. Both bags are suitable for use by KS1, 2 and SEN groups. Use of the handling bags must be booked in advance.

Toy Detectives

KS1 History; QCA Unit 1 How are our Toys different from those in the past?
A fun, hands on workshop where the children explore the differences between old toys and new looking at materials, how the toys were used, and Trevor's Time Boxes!

*New* Who's Coming to Dinner ?

KS1 Science; QCA Unit
In this fun workshop pupils help to prepare for an animal dinner party! Pupils must find out the names of guests, what they eat, where they live and who they should sit with. The workshop uses natural history specimens to help pupils explore and examine some of the plants and animals found in the local environment.
1 hour museum led hands on session

KS1
In this hands on workshop pupils will find out more about the lives of 2 families through object based investigation. Pupils will dig for, record, sort and describe stone age objects and then explore the Victorians of Cliffe Castle through dressing up and object handling.

Ancient Egyptian Mummification Workshop

KS2 History; QCA Unit 10 What can we find out about ancient Egypt from what has survived?
Find out all about how the Ancient Egyptians prepared their dead for the Afterlife. The session includes an opportunity for children to handle real burial objects from Ancient Egypt, and to find out how the mummy in Cliffe Castle’s collections met her death.

As budding geologists children will experiment with grouping rocks, learning how rocks are formed and which rocks are important to us.

Habitats and Adaptations

KS2 Science; QCA Unit 4B Habitats
Children will meet a host of local animals from our Natural History collections and become 'Habitat Estate Agents'. They will then investigate how the animals are adapted to living in their particular habitats.

Bones, Muscles and Movement

KS2 Science; QCA Unit 4A Moving and Growing
The children will attempt to decipher which skull belongs to which animal in an interesting and different handling session. Though role play they explore which bone structures help different animals move in different ways.

KS2 History; QCA unit 18 What was it like to live here in the past ?
Using the museum collections & our interactive dig pupils will discover life as an archaeologist. Using evidence and objects from stone age and Victorian Britain pupils must record, observe, discuss, dig & dress up to find out more about the lives of 2 historical families.
1.5 hour museum led session.

Patterns in Glass

KS2 Art and Design; QCA Unit 3B Investigating Pattern
Using Cliffe Castle's stunning Morris & Co. stained glass and fabulously furnished reception rooms the children draw details of pattern. They then create their own laminated 'stained glass' to take back to school for the classroom window.

Belonging

KS2/3 PSHE & Citizenship, English; Speaking and Listening
Cliffe Castle is full of fascinating objects from all over the world. How did they get here? Should they stay here? Can you help us decide where objects really belong?
Lively debate and discussion, with artefacts to handle from Keighley, Pakistan, Egypt.

Classification

KS3 Science; Unit 7D Variation & Classification. Art and Design.
In this workshop pupils will get up close to the natural history collection and use this to help them sort vertebrates from invertebrates and identify key features of vertebrate groups. Students will then produce a relief print of an animal which can be ‘classified’ back at school.
2 Hour Education Officer led hands on session.
