Welcome to Cliffe Castle’s Learning & Outreach programme.

Our taught workshop programme supports schools to deliver a broad, balanced and rich curriculum through a range of subjects, skills and SMSC development – see individual workshops for details.

The Art and Science of Noticing

KS1,2 & 3
A new enquiry based facilitated workshop that encourages children to respond to the objects, collections and buildings of Bradford Museums & Galleries which inspire them. It supports children to investigate and make links between themselves, other times, other places and the world around them. Teachers can identify areas of the museum building or collection they want to work with and then let pupils be guided by their own curiosity to create personal responses, all supported by museum staff.

Who’s coming to dinner?

KS1
In this hands on workshop designed for Year 2, pupils help to prepare for an animal dinner party! Pupils must find out the names of guests, what they eat, where they live and who they should sit with. The workshop uses natural history specimens to help pupils explore and examine some of the plants and animals found in the local environment.

History Detectives

KS1
In this workshop pupils will look at how objects can be used to tell us about people in the past. Pupils will dig for, record, sort and describe Stone Age objects and then explore the Victorians of Cliffe Castle through dressing up and objects handling.

Toys through time

KS1
Schools or groups wanting to enjoy a hands on toys experience can book to use our 'toys through time' handling boxes – a fantastic collection of real toys from Victorian times to the present day –with full teacher/helper instructions.

Rocks and Fossils

KS2
As budding geologists pupils will experiment with examining, identifying and grouping rocks and dig for fossils. Exploring everyday objects pupils will discover just how useful rocks can be!

Ancient Egyptians

KS2
Find out all about how the Ancient Egyptians prepared their dead for the Afterlife in our hands on workshop. The session includes an opportunity for children to handle real burial objects from Ancient Egypt, and to find out how the mummy in Cliffe Castle’s collections met her death.

Habitats and Adaptations

KS2
Children will meet a host of local animals from our Natural History collections and become 'Habitat Estate Agents'. They will then investigate how the animals are adapted to living in their particular habitats.

Bones, Muscles and Movement

KS2
The children will attempt to decipher which skull belongs to which animal in an interesting and different handling session. Though role play they explore which bone and muscle structures help different animals move in different ways.

Cliffe Castle is full of fascinating objects from all over the world. How did they get here? Should they stay here? Can you help us decide where objects really belong? Lively cultural debate and discussion, with artefacts to handle from Keighley, Pakistan and Egypt.

Early years and KS1
Early Years and KS1 groups can enjoy our dolls house, builders rocks, sit on sheep, tactile cards, dressing up and even create their own Keighley building with our building blocks.
