Digging the Tudors

KS2 History: 1a, 1b, 2a, 2b, 2c, 3, 4a, 4b, 5a, 5b, 5c, 7, 8a, 10
KS2 English: En1 Speaking 1e, 2a, 2b, 2e, 3a, 3c, 4d, 6b.

This workshop introduces the students to how Tudor life was lived at Bolling Hall through carrying out an archaeological dig and exploring the museum. There are two parts to the workshop, half of the students learn the skills of the archaeology and take part in a mini dig, the second half of the students take part in a trail around the museum, students then swap over after an hour. Through the workshop students find out about the everyday lives of Tudors, from those working in the kitchens to Lord and Lady of the House.

KS1 History

What was the housework like in the old days? Find clues and join in activities in the actual rooms where families used to live at Bolling Hall.

An introduction to Tudor times which includes some children dressing in reproduction costumes and a chance for all children to handle Tudor objects.

It is midwinter 1600. A stranger arrives at Bolling Hall. Who is this midwinter guest? Where does he come from? Is he who he says he is? Story-telling and discussion with suggestions for follow-up work back at school.

Working with two actors, the children meet the Protestant servant Joan Beldon and the Catholic travelling player Nick Nidderdale. This drama/workshop vividly illustrates the religious tensions of the Tudor period and brings a Tudor house to life.
2 hour Museum’s Learning Team led drama/workshop.

Civil War Cipher Trail (KS2)

The English Civil War has started. Rich families like the Tempests who own Bolling Hall support the King. These are dangerous times. Follow the cipher trail around the house to unlock the hidden messages. Ask on reception for your cipher trail.

SEN/ Early Years Activities

Print off the attachments and visit the various rooms of the house and complete activities. Clipboards and paper are available on request from reception.
