Projections in Space and Time - Agathe Sorel

An exciting major exhibition of sculpture and printmaking by the Hungarian-born artist. This is a retrospective of Sorel's work from 1959-2003, and includes some new work on show for the first time. Her use of Perspex and other thermal plastics have enabled Sorel to make many fascinating sculptures using transparent volumes and floating colour. The exhibition incorporates The Modern Tradition, presenting the collection of Sorel and husband Gabor Sitkey, which includes such pieces by Gaughin, Rothenstein, Munch, Picasso and more.

Curated by Tessa Sidey, Curator of Prints and Drawings, Birmingham Museums and Art Gallery.

In 1956 Sorel enrolled at the Camberwell School of Art, where the artist Michael Rothenstein took her under his wing. When she later won the Gulbenkian scholarship, Rothenstein recommended her to study with S.W. Hayter at the Atelier 17 in Paris. This world-famous engraver had worked with artists from Marc Chagall, Max Ernst, Alberto Giacometti to Juan Miro.

Work by Agathe Sorel

Sorel's experience at the Atelier 17 influenced her entire career and in 1966-67 she was awarded a Churchill fellowship to work in the United States and Mexico. Moholy -Nagy, the Hungarian member of the Bauhaus who moved to Chicago during the Second World War, had listed many perspectival systems. Sorel was fascinated by spatial characteristics, particularly those which could be applied to Perspex and other thermal plastics. These materials later enabled her to make many fascinating sculptures using transparent volumes and floating colour.

The artist's work is represented in many major museums and public collections, including the Tate Gallery and the British Museum.
