Journeys - paintings by J Chuhan

Chuhan's paintings portray her response to the appearance, personality and inner life of people who have posed for her as models, and explore ideas of intimacy and sexuality, strength and fragility. Alongside are paintings and drawings of anonymous passengers observed on urban journeys, juxtaposing transient and private moments within a public environment. Chuhan's work encompasses Asian and Western influences in a distinctly vigorous painterly language of colour and form.

The title 'Journeys' is a metaphor for experiences including migrations and relocations, colonisation and acculturation, identification and identities, art as a 'survival strategy' and as a record of experience.

'Journeys' also refers to J Chuhan's development as an artist. Her paintings explore ideas of intimacy and sexuality, strength and fragility in portraits of people who have posed for her. Other paintings are of anonymous people observed in transient locations (e.g. trains), juxtaposing private moments in public environments, with a strong emphasis on directly observed location drawings forming the basis of subsequent paintings. These works reflect the e in their private thoughts conservation supervision. whilst they are caught in un-self-conscious poses when they are not actively interacting with others.
