Precious Cargo

Precious Cargo in Bradford is part of Stories of the World, a project of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad.

Golden Threads, Bradford's 2012 exhibition for the Cultural Olympiad, is part of the London 2012 Festival. - Young Curators take over in Bradford

The exhibition opens at Bradford Industrial museum on Sat 19 May 2012 and closes on Sun16 September 2012.

Over the coming months the Young Curators will be selecting items with curatorial and collections staff which will be included in the exhibition and it will be their ideas and research which will be reflected in the exhibition.

Groups of young people aged 14 – 24 have met regularly to investigate the collections, work with artists and learn new skills through different workshops. Precious Cargo focuses on the textile collections which have links with many parts of the world and of course Bradford was famous for producing woollen cloth!

They have already worked with a fashion designer and been part of a film, learned about batik, wax printed cloth and weaving, using objects from the collections as inspiration. The pieces created will also be included in the exhibition.

“This is an opportunity to explore Bradford’s collections and gain new and varied experience. Precious Cargo has allowed me to see lots of interesting things and access some really brilliant and key knowledge from the Collections Officers. Hopefully we will continue to make new and challenging things, questioning the exhibition norm.”

Simon
