Unfair Trade – Africa, West Yorkshire & Slavery
KS3 & KS4
Unfair trade is a powerful workshop newly created for Bradford Museums. The workshop supports Citizenship, History and English and will engage students in an interactive debate uncovering stories of Africa and the slave trade. Inspired by our museum collections, students will engage directly with museum objects to explore the motives of slave owners and anti-slavery campaigners of 18th and 19th century Bradford. Unfair trade also makes reference to industrial slavery in the mills of West Yorkshire and to some examples of slavery today.
At Bolling Hall Museum, in the privileged setting of the 18th century dining room and drawing room, students will learn how some West Yorkshire people profited by slavery and how others opposed it.
